Preparation Groups
Once you have had time to look at our initial adoption information, you may wish to meet with an IOMAS worker to discuss some of the questions you have about your specific circumstances. If then you wish to learn more about adoption, you will be invited to attend one of our Preparation Groups.
The aim of the Preparation Group is to enable you to make an informed decision about whether adoption is right for you.
When and where do groups take place?
Groups are held 2 or 3 times each year and the dates are set at the beginning of the year. The venue is normally in Onchan or Douglas. Click here to view our events diary.
How long is the Preparation Group?
Each Preparation Group consists of 1 evening session from 7pm to 9pm, and 4 day sessions from 9.00am to 4.00pm (usually in 2x2 day blocks on consecutive weeks).
Do I have to attend all sessions?
Yes it is really important that anyone who is thinking about adopting attends the whole course in order to ensure they are as fully prepared for the task of adoption as possible. In respect of couples interested in adoption they should both attend all sessions.
What is the Content of the Groups?
The areas covered in the Preparation Group include:
- The adoption process from interest to adoption order (and beyond)
- Child Development
- Attachment
- The effects of neglect and abuse
- Dealing with separation and loss
- Resilience
- Identity
- Contact issues
- The lifelong impact of Adoption
- Adoption from differing perspectives
A number of invited guests will share their knowledge and experience of adoption. These include adoptive parents, adopted people and accounts from birth parents as well as professionals from other children’s services. |
